What Is a Holland Lop Rabbit?

Let’s start with the basics, what exactly is a Holland Lop rabbit? (Aside from adorable, obviously.) The Holland Lop is a breed of lop-eared rabbit, meaning their little ears don't stand upright. Holland Lops were officially recognized by the American Rabbit Breeder Association (ARBA) in 1979. The Holland Lop, with a maximum weight of 4lb according to its standard in the ARBA, it is the smallest of the lop-eared breeds, and among the smallest breeds of rabbit overall. 

Holland Lops are one of the most popular and sought after rabbit breeds in the world. They were originally created by Dutch breeder Adrian de Cock, as a mix of a tiny Netherland dwarf buck and the much larger French Lop doe. They are very muscular in relation to their compact frame, and have a wide variety of over 146 coat colours, over 30 of which are officially recognized by the ARBA.

Are Holland Lop Rabbits Good Pets for Children?

While Holland Lops are rather cold hardy, unfortunately, due to their short snouts, stocky builds, and lopped ears, they struggle regulating their internal temperatures in the heat. So, when housing Holland Lops outside you have to ensure they have many measures to keep them cool in even “mild heat” and a way to keep them warm in extreme cold.
