Kunekune Piglets in Idaho: Two Litters Coming Soon to Reynolds Family Farms

Things are about to get a whole lot busier around Reynolds Family Farms.

We currently have two bred Kunekune sows, and if everything continues as expected, we should be welcoming two litters of Kunekune piglets here on our farm in Nampa, Idaho within the next several weeks.

For our family, this is one of those parts of raising animals that we have been looking forward to for a long time. We have loved getting to know the personalities of our adult Kunekunes, but there is something pretty exciting about preparing for the first tiny piglets to start running around the farm.

Why We Chose Kunekune Pigs

We have written before about why we chose Kunekune pigs for our family farm, and having them here has only made us appreciate the breed more.

Kunekunes are smaller than many traditional production pig breeds and are well known for their friendly personalities. Ours have become a normal part of everyday life around the farm, especially for the kids.

They are curious, social, food motivated, and usually very interested in whatever we happen to be doing near their pasture.

And soon, there should be quite a few more of them!

What Will Our Kunekune Piglets Be Like?

One of the fun things about a new litter is that you really do not know exactly what you are going to get until the piglets arrive.

Kunekunes can come in a wide variety of colors and markings, and every piglet will have its own personality as it grows.

During those first weeks, our main priority will simply be giving the moms and babies the time and environment they need while we watch the piglets grow and develop.

As they get older, the kids will also get plenty of opportunities to spend time around them. Being raised on a family farm means our animals are around people, kids, chores, noises, and normal farm life from an early age.

That socialization is especially important to us.

How Many Piglets Are We Expecting?

That is the question everybody wants answered, including us.

There is no way for us to know exactly how many piglets each of our girls will have until farrowing day arrives.

Kunekune litters are commonly somewhere around six to eight piglets, but every sow and every pregnancy is different. We could end up with fewer, more, or somewhere right around the average.

So for now, we are watching the girls, getting ready, and waiting.

When Will the Piglets Be Available?

We are not putting an exact availability date on these litters yet.

First, the piglets need to be born healthy. Then they need time with mom to nurse, grow, develop, and begin showing us their individual personalities.

Once the litters arrive, we will begin sharing pictures and updates so anyone interested in one of our Kunekune piglets can follow their progress from the very beginning.

We will also announce availability as we get closer to the appropriate time for the piglets to leave our farm.
